Thigh Lift

Thighplasty · Cruroplasty

A thigh lift removes excess, sagging skin from the inner or outer thighs and re-tightens the underlying tissue. It suits patients whose skin has lost elasticity through weight loss or ageing and does not respond to exercise.

Who this procedure suits

This operation addresses loose skin on the thighs that hangs, chafes, or causes discomfort with movement or clothing. It does not reduce fat volume or improve cellulite texture; it removes and tightens excess skin so the thigh contour follows the underlying muscle more closely.

A good candidate if

  • Loose, sagging skin on the inner or outer thighs following significant weight loss
  • Skin laxity causing chafing, irritation, or restricted movement
  • Thigh skin that has lost elasticity with age and does not improve with exercise
  • Stable weight for at least 6-12 months with realistic expectations about visible scarring

Not suitable if

  • Ongoing weight loss or plans for further significant weight change
  • Smoking that cannot be stopped before and after surgery
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or a diagnosed clotting disorder
  • Excess fat with good skin elasticity, better suited to liposuction alone

How the procedure is performed

Consultation

Dr Cardinali examines skin laxity and elasticity, discusses the incision pattern that suits your anatomy, reviews your medical history, and explains realistic outcomes and scar placement.

Preparation

Blood tests and a general health check are arranged. Smoking must stop in advance. Some medications are adjusted, and compression garments are fitted before surgery.

Surgery

Under general anaesthesia, an incision is made along the groin crease and, if needed, extended down the inner thigh. Excess skin and fat are removed, deeper tissue is repositioned and secured, and the incision is closed in layers. Drains may be placed.

Follow-up

You are reviewed within the first week to check the wound and remove drains if used. Further visits monitor healing, garment fit, and suture removal.

Recovery — what actually happens

Day 1-3Rest with limited walking. Compression garment worn continuously. Drains checked and removed when appropriate.
Week 1Swelling and bruising are expected. Short, gentle walks are encouraged. Avoid stairs, driving, and prolonged sitting.
Week 2-4Return to light daily activity and desk work. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting remain restricted. Garment worn as advised.
Month 2-3Swelling continues to settle. Scars are still pink and firm. Gradual return to structured exercise, guided by your surgeon.
Month 6-12Scars mature and fade further. Thigh contour and final result become more apparent.

Honest medicine — the risks

Every surgical procedure carries potential risks. Risks vary with the procedure and your health, and the surgeon will discuss them with you along with the measures used to reduce them:

ScarringIncisions are placed within the groin crease and inner thigh where possible; meticulous closure and scar care support fading over time.
InfectionProphylactic antibiotics and sterile surgical technique reduce this risk.
Delayed wound healingThe inner thigh is prone to tension and friction; tension-reducing suturing and activity restriction support healing.
Thromboembolism (blood clots)Compression stockings, early mobilisation, and in some cases blood-thinning medication reduce this risk.
Seroma (fluid collection)Drains and well-fitted compression garments help prevent fluid build-up.
AsymmetryCareful preoperative marking and a symmetric surgical technique reduce this risk.
Altered sensationNumbness or tingling in the thigh is usually temporary and improves as nerves recover.

Frequently asked questions

How visible will the scars be?

Scars sit in the groin crease and may extend down the inner thigh. They are firm and pink at first, fading gradually over 12-18 months.

Will a thigh lift remove cellulite?

No. It tightens loose skin but does not change the dimpled texture associated with cellulite.

Can it be combined with liposuction?

In some cases, yes. Whether this suits you is assessed individually during consultation.

Is recovery painful?

Most patients describe tightness and discomfort rather than sharp pain, managed with prescribed medication.

When can I resume exercise?

Light walking begins early. Higher-impact activity is generally introduced around two to three months, depending on healing.

Is this procedure right for you?

The only correct answer comes from a clinical examination. Book a consultation — in person, or by video if you are outside the UAE.
