Rib Remodeling
Rib remodeling is a surgical procedure that reshapes the lower ribs to refine the waistline. The ribs are not removed. They are carefully repositioned through small incisions and heal in their new position. It is often combined with liposuction of the waist.
Who this procedure suits
For some people, the width of the waist is set by the shape of the lower ribs rather than by fat. In these cases liposuction alone cannot narrow the waist any further. Rib remodeling works on this framework. It is a relatively new technique and long-term data are still limited, so careful patient selection is essential.
A good candidate if
- The flare of your lower ribs is a main factor in your waist width
- Your weight is stable and your general health is good
- Your bone health is good
- You expect a moderate, natural refinement of the waist
Not suitable if
- You have osteoporosis or a condition that affects bone healing
- You have a significant lung or chest wall condition
- You smoke and are unwilling to stop, as smoking impairs bone healing
- You expect a dramatic change in proportions or weight loss
How the procedure is performed
Consultation
Dr Roseli examines the shape of your waist and lower ribs, and may request imaging. She explains whether the rib framework is really the main factor in your waist width, or whether liposuction alone could achieve your goal.
Preparation
Blood tests and medical clearance. Stopping smoking well before surgery is essential for bone healing. You will receive instructions on medication and fasting before anaesthesia.
Surgery
Under general anaesthesia, small incisions give access to the lower ribs. Using precise instruments such as a piezoelectric (ultrasonic) device, controlled partial cuts allow the ribs to be gently repositioned inward without removing them. Liposuction of the waist is often performed at the same time. A compression garment or corset is fitted at the end.
Follow-up
Close follow-up in the first weeks to check pain control, breathing comfort and wound healing, and to adjust the garment while the ribs heal in their new position.
Recovery — what actually happens
Honest medicine — the risks
Every surgical procedure carries potential risks. Risks vary with the procedure and your health, and the surgeon will discuss them with you along with the measures used to reduce them:
Frequently asked questions
Are the ribs removed?
No. The ribs are reshaped and repositioned, not removed, and they heal in their new position.
Is the result permanent?
Once the ribs have healed, their new position is stable. Your waist can still change with weight changes, and long-term data on this technique are still limited.
Will it affect my breathing?
You may feel discomfort when breathing deeply during the first weeks. The procedure is planned to protect the lungs, and any concern is assessed before and after surgery.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
It is often combined with liposuction of the waist. Other combinations depend on what is safe for you and are decided at consultation.
How much will my waist change?
This depends on your anatomy. The aim is a moderate, natural refinement, and no specific number can be promised before an examination.
Is this the same as rib removal?
No. Rib remodeling keeps the ribs and changes their position, rather than removing them.
Is this procedure right for you?
The only correct answer comes from a clinical examination. Book a consultation — in person, or by video if you are outside the UAE.
